As we continue to strive towards new successes, it is more important than ever for all levels of government to support tourism – an industry that contributes more than $32 billion annually to Queensland’s economy. With the state election fast approaching, QTIC has been advocating to the major parties on six key priorities that you, our members, say are critical for tourism to thrive.
To mark World Tourism Day earlier this month, we brought together the Queensland Premier, the Hon Steven Miles MP, and Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Tourism, Mr David Crisafulli MP, to address over 200 QTIC members and industry peers. Each leader spoke of their vision for the future of our state’s tourism industry and the promises they will deliver on should Queenslander’s elect them in October. Both sides of the political spectrum emphasised the importance of advancing product development, leveraging Queensland’s unique landscapes and rich cultural heritage, driving investment, and reigniting excitement for Brisbane 2032.
QTIC’s advocacy efforts also ramped up on a federal level this month, when, along with representatives from the Australian Tourism Industry Council, we met with the Federal Government and Opposition in Canberra to discuss key tourism issues – including retaining long-stay Working Holiday Markers, securing funding for regional tourism attractions, and seeing regulatory reform for sustainable tourism initiatives.
While in Canberra, I had the joy of attending the 2024 Australian Top Tourism Town Awards, where our nation’s tourism industry applauded Magnetic Island operator, Adam Hinks, who was crowned the best tour guide in the country. Queensland’s Top Tourism Town for 2024, Roma, was also presented with a podium finish, when they took out Bronze on a national level. It is wonderful to see outstanding Queensland communities and operators recognised and rewarded for their steadfast commitment to visitor excellence.
Later this year in November, we will come together once again and unite in celebrating our industry’s best at the 39th Queensland Tourism Awards Gala Ceremony in Brisbane. If you are yet to buy a ticket to tourism’s night of nights, I urge you to secure your spot before spaces go.
The awards evening will be a bittersweet one for me as it will conclude my time as CEO of QTIC. I cannot think of a more fitting way to culminate my time with this remarkable organisation than by applauding exemplary industry talent alongside so many of you. I have loved my time with QTIC and am incredibly proud of what the team has accomplished. I am confident that the organisation is well placed to continue delivering tremendous successes for you, our members, and industry. As such, the time is right for me to move into a new role, but not before seeing industry celebrated on a grand scale in November.
Kind regards,
Brett Fraser
