The protection of the reef was the hot topic at the QTIC office yesterday with the latest meeting of the steering committee for the Natural Environmental Science Program (NESP) Tropical Water Quality (TWQ) Hub.
QTIC Chief Executive and NESP TWQ Hub Committee Member Daniel Gschwind said the six-year Federal Government funding initiative – which is now into its second half – supports applied environmental science research projects for the protection of the Great Barrier Reef through partnerships facilitated by the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre (RRRC).
“The committee has a strong focus on supporting projects that will have tangible and practical solutions for users – including the tourism industry – and the communities who depend on the reef,” Mr Gschwind said.
“The aim of these projects is to help maintain and improve the water quality of the Reef’s catchment and coast.
“What we have is a very productive collaborative partnership between industry, government and science.”
The $31.9 million TWQ Hub is administered by the RRRC. The not-for-profit focuses on engagement with key sectors and research providers to deliver solutions based on good science that address key topical environmental management issues.
QTIC is a founding member of the RRRC.
