Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, QTIC has modified the Salute to Excellence Awards program to allow for nominations and judging to take place completely online. The 'skills test day' for secondary students has been modified to include video submissions demonstrating practical skills, responses to written assessment submitted by PDF into the Judgify system, and face to face interviews with judges conducted through scheduled webinars.
We do feel it is very important to keep this program going, even under the current, trying circumstances. We owe it to the young, aspiring professionals who will be so important for the future of our industry. Teachers, employers and our sponsors have also committed to the long-term career development in tourism and hospitality and QTIC equally remains focused on this task.
The formal awards dinner will be postponed until early 2021. Finalists will not be kept in suspense until next year, QTIC will be holding an online event to announce the winners on the 27 July 2020.

Tourism Industry Business Capability Program
In light of the current circumstances related to COVID-19, the Department of Innovation and Tourism Industry Development (DITID) and the Tourism Industry Business Capability Development Program (TIBCDP) Reference Group have asked QTIC to suspend all promotion and delivery of the TIBCDP activities, up until the 1 June 2020.
QTIC will seek further consultation from Regional Tourism Organisations on the 30 April 2020. This meeting will provide an opportunity to present proposed delivery of future activities and events, focusing on the needs of businesses in light of the unique circumstances they find themselves in due to COVID-19.
Flexible Chef Apprenticeship
The QTIC, RTSP program was designed as a flexible cookery apprenticeship to permit participant mobility across the state. The program provides participants with the flexibility to continue their studies during periods of unemployment. We will maintain this effective initiative during this time, based on the strong industry interest we have received.
The program targets casual cooks wanting to gain the professional trade qualification, SIT30816 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. To date, QTIC has qualified more than 150 professional cooks across Queensland with our partner RTOs.
