On the other hand, we are trying to look over the horizon and support the effort to prepare our industry and our state for the recovery. If there is a ‘silver lining’ to this catastrophe it may be that we can reset, recalibrate and refocus in way that would be difficult under business-as-usual conditions. The QTIC board had its (Zoom) meeting this week, committed the organisation to work diligently to support the industry on this mission and direct our resources towards that. We look forward to engaging with all of you. We have had many approaches from membership: operators in all sectors, educators, consultants, researchers, advisors, retired tourism ‘sages’, even students… all keen to commit their knowledge and intellectual power to the rebuilding process. We appreciate that.
And while we don’t want to crowd the ever-growing market of webinars, we will offer a short session next week (see below). Our very well know tourism advocate and media presenter Sofie Formica will host a panel of tourism professionals to talk about the likely future trade environment. The four panellists have each been supporting the Capacity Building – Trade Ready program. We hope many of you can join the session.

Queensland Government Loan scheme (administered through QRIDA)
Concerns and some misinterpretation has been circulating about the state governments very popular interest-free loan scheme. This is the official information:
QRIDA Jobs Support Loans closed to new applications
Due to overwhelming demand, the Queensland Government’s $500 million COVID-19 Jobs Support Loans scheme has now closed to new applications. Since the scheme opened on 26 March, more than $160 million has been approved to over 1,000 businesses across the state helping to support over 15,000 Queensland jobs (as at 18 April).
Submitted applications that have already been received, will be assessed in the date order that they have been received complete with all the required information for assessment. Applications will continue to be assessed up until the $500 million funding is fully exhausted. For more information on expected processing times and next steps:

This month, the Government introduced new legislation that not only impacts the much-anticipated JobKeeper payment scheme but also introduces various amendments to the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) (Fair Work Act).

Federal Statement’s on VET: Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Whilst workplaces have been disrupted in dramatic ways, both government and industry are making significant efforts to maintain some stability for trainees, apprentices and students. They may not be a priority for many operators now, but a reliable supply of skilled staff will be essential for the eventual recovery. It is also important to rebuild our reputation as an industry that offers long-term career prospects.
